Fandom

I like fandom, I really do. It gets a bad rap because when it’s bad, it’s really bad. I don’t think about it too much, but I’ve done fan art before. It just didn’t occur to me at the time. A couple years ago, back in my youth (and by youth, I mean sophomore year of college), I loved to leave graffiti on other peoples’ facebook walls. Graffiti was an application that would allow the recipient to play back the drawing as the drawer drew it. I was fascinated by this. However, as I continued to do graffiti, I started having problems coming up with drawable ideas.

Then I rewatched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and a dazzling new idea occurred to me- I could illustrate screenshots from that movie. At this point, I had no tablet. I, however, had quite a bit of patience.
Thus, this following graffiti was drawn for a friend:

That was so much fun, I drew others. I eventually began using quotes and non-screenshots.

I even did some for other movies.

I loved doing Wild Wild West because the quotes were just so silly.

The Matrix was also a good place to look for quotes:

Since Heath Ledger died, I felt it also pertinent to use quotes from A Knight’s Tale.

  1. I’m pretty sure this blog post needs the shiny codpiece graffiti. =P

  2. Your abilities with graffiti astound me! I always tried to use that application unsuccessfully back when I was on facebook. It always took forever to do one small picture, and I could never get the lines to do exactly what I wanted. There was some serious mouse-frustration going on with graffiti, for me.
Tell me how you do it! I always just assumed that all of the really good graffitis that were shown in the application were created by magicians or mythical creatures. Maybe you’re a magician…. I don’t know.

  3. Wow! The graffiti you did here is so good! I really like how you go into detail, especially with the color tones that change. Also, the detail in the face. You are very talented at this!

  4. Well, since I used a laptop, I wasn’t really using a mouse. I think the touch pad might be a little easier to draw with.

    Thanks!

  5. I used to love using the Graffiti app on Facebook! These are absolutely amazing though, I wish I could get as much detail into mine…

  6. I love this, not only are your graffiti drawings amazing, but the fact that so many have also experimented with this app as apparent in the comments suggests a whole moment of fun, creative play in Facebook that I know nothing about. “There are more things on the internet, Horatio,/Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Never truer words spoken, and I love when they hit me like a diamond through the forehead. Wow!

  7. Facebook has a level of creativity to it that isn’t readily apparent. Aside from the page-editing assignments that some of my classmates did this semester, there have been times when my facebook friends have used drawings for their profile pictures, and there is always an active video-sharing culture going on.

Then you have apps like Graffiti and buttons and bumper stickers and so many others. It’s pretty awesome. Now, I’m not saying that Facebook is the only place to go to find these things, but it’s interesting how a social networking site like that can be hijacked to spread internet creative culture.

  8. @Luis: thanks! It just takes some practice. By the time I drew Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead graffitis, I had been practicing with graffitis for my friends of inside jokes.

  9. you totally went crazy with this assignment, but I love it!

very cool stuff you’ve created ;D

    • Well… I didn’t create all these at once. The only real work that I specifically put into the assignment was tracking down all of the graffiti that I had done and copying them to my computer, then uploading them here. I was pleased that I could use prior work to finish the assignment.
